Here at Shattuck-St. Mary’s, the choir program stands out as a cornerstone of the arts, combining community, creativity, and excellence. With a reputation for talent, the choir is often considered one of the best art classes on campus.
“We try to make a safe space, a space that allows a variety of opinions, ability levels, and backgrounds,” said Mr. Peter Schleif, Director of the Vocal Performance Program, “You can contribute very early on, even with very little experience.”
The choir performs at various events throughout the year, from Christmas in the Chapel to Family Weekend. This allows students to showcase their skills and experience the joy of performing. Beyond this, students love the class for its sense of belonging.
“Music can help connect people,” said Alice Garlinski ‘30, an alto who joined the Middle School Choir last year. “It’s nice to be able to connect with people that I don’t usually talk to.”
The program offers opportunities for growth. With ensembles like the Chamber Choir and the Middle School Choir, students have chances to explore different genres, from classical to modern. Students also learn valuable skills such as teamwork and discipline, lessons that extend beyond the music room.
“Choir teaches life skills,” said Adelina Mukhametzhanova ‘26, a soprano who has been part of the Chamber Choir for three years. “It’s a community, with not even just music related people.”
Whether it’s the music or the community, the choir remains an example of the heart of the arts at Shattuck-St. Mary’s. Interested students are encouraged to join or visit a rehearsal to experience the class firsthand. Choir will be performing at Family Weekend on Friday, Jan. 31.
